Seminar on Scientific Soft Skills (NPGR010) - summer semester 2018/2019

Purpose

This seminar is for students who want to improve their scientific soft-skills in the English language. The attendees will:

• Learn to work with research papers effectively
• Learn to write research papers/reports/presentations
• Practice the full working cycle in English (read-write-talk)
• Learn about recent research in computer graphics
• Practice English grammar and speaking

Organization

• The seminar is held exclusively in English, i.e., all the papers, discussions, talks and reports are in English.
• Regular participation in the seminar is required. Students are allowed to miss the seminar without a proper excuse at most twice.
• Lectures on various aspects of the "soft" scientific work (reading, writing, presenting) will be given by the lecturer.
• From week to week, students will deliver home assignments from Hewings: Advanced grammar in use. Delivering these assignments is a condition for passing the class.
• In the 2nd and 3rd week, students give a 3-minute worm-up presentation where they introduce themselves and talk about their current research work, hobbies, interests etc. Anything goes.
• Each student chooses either his/her own work or one existing paper to work with. During the semester, the student will
  • prepare a conference-style presentation of the paper with slides (15 + 5 minutes sharp)
  • write a critical review of the paper (review form)
  • lead a critical discussion of the paper in the class
